The New Jewish Cemetery (Czech: Nový židovský hřbitov) in Žižkov, Prague, Czech Republic, was established in 1891 to relieve the space problem at the Old Jewish Cemetery, Prague. It is about 10 times bigger than the Old Jewish Cemetery and provides space for approximately 100,000 graves, therefore having the capacity to serve for a whole century. There is also a specially designated area for urns, though the Jewish tradition does not allow cremation. The cemetery is still in use today and operated by the Jewish Community in Prague.
I found that my 2X Great Grand Father Adolf Gross was buried there. Here is his burial record i found at Jewish Gen
The New Jewish Cemetery Address is :

This handsome man is Emil Gross (II). He was my Grand Father i never got a chance to meet. Son of Emil Gross (I) & Marie Rožumberská.
Emil Gross (II) was born in Prague on February 10th, 1903 as a 3rd child of 4. In his young age, he used to live in Nikolajka Street, Prague. My Mother gave me a lot of his father’s Post Cards from his best friend , addressed to Nikolajka Street. This is one of those Post Cards :
As i never got a chance to meet him, his Pictures and those Post Cards are a special way i can feel close to him. I cherished them so much. And some times i think, how nice it is that his descendants can actually hold his Post Cards. What will our descendants keep of us in this digital era ?
Emil Gross (II) was married to Věra Hamšiková on December 20th, 1946. My Mother gave me her parents Marriage Certificate :
Emil Gross (I) & Věra Hamšiková’s Wedding Picture :
Emil Gross (II) was 48 years old when his only daughter was born on January 6th, 1951. She is my Mother, Věra Grossová. I’m planning to ask my Mother to tell me her memories about her father. And i will update this page later.
My Grand Father passed away on March 9th, 1964. Here are his Death Records :
Emil Gross (I) was born in Prague, April 7th 1871. He was my Great grand Father. Here is his birth Record. He had Circumcision ceremony on April 14th, 1871.
My Mother always told me that Emil Gross (I) was raised in a Catholic Orphanage, and didn’t knew he was a Jew until some SS officers found his records and told him before WW2, just before the Holocaust tragedy. He was lucky that he was married with my Great Grand Mother who was a Catholic Czech. So he was not transported to Terezin, although he still had to use that Yellow Star on his clothes, and treated just like any other Jewish at that time.
The mystery about -why he was raised in a Catholic Orphanage- was answered when i found his mother’s Death Record here. She passed away because of Typhus in Humpolec on February 16th 1875, when Emil Gross (I) was only 4 years old. So, i assume that Adolf couldn’t took care of Emil Gross (I) and put him to the Orphanage.
Emil Gross (I) was married to Marie Rožumberská. Marriage date still unknown. The couple had 4 children :
Emilie Grossová (1901). She was than married to Jaroslav Ebr and had no children.
Marie Grossová (February 28th, 1902). She was a Czech Actrees, later married to Jiri Sedlacek (an Actor & Movie Director) on 1929, but they divorced on 1931 without children. She passed away in Prague on June 28th, 1972.
Adolf, my 2X Great Grand Father was born in Dubi, Bohemia, Czech on 1823 as a first child of 7.
Based on his Marriage Record i found here, Adolf Gross was married to Cäcilia König in Prague, May 1st 1870. The wedding was witnessed by Markus Gross and Ignaz Gross (no proof yet, but i think Ignaz was our relative).
Cäcilia was born in Raudnitz, Bohemia, Czech on February 24th 1846 to Josepin Goppert. I can’t read her father’s name, looks like Moritz König but i’m not sure yet. I found her birth record here and here.
The couple had 1 son, Emil Gross (I) , which is my Great Grand Father. Emil Gross (I) was born in Prague, on April 7th 1871.
Sadly, i found Cäcilia König’s death record here. She passed away because of Typhus in Humpolec on February 16th 1875, when Emil Gross (I) was only 4 years old. I’m still researching where she was buried.
Adolf Gross did not remaried after he lost Cäcilia König. He passed away in Dubi, Bohemia, Czech on July 28 1898 because of Chronic Kidney Disease.
He was buried on July 31st 1898 at New Jewish Cemetery, Praha 3 Zizkov. I found his Burial Record here and here.
